How to Play Tambola

Tambola, also called Housie, is the game most Indian families already know from get-togethers, colony functions and train journeys. One person calls numbers from 1 to 90, everyone else has a ticket and marks the numbers as they are called. The first to complete a pattern wins that prize. This app is the same game on your phones, so a group in different homes can play together.

The ticket

A ticket has 3 rows and 9 columns. Each row has 5 numbers and 4 blanks, so a ticket carries 15 numbers. The first column holds numbers from 1 to 9, the second from 10 to 19, and so on up to 80 to 90 in the last column. Every ticket is different.

Starting a game

  1. One person taps Create Game, chooses how many players and how many tickets each player gets (1 to 3), and whether there is a Lucky Number.
  2. The app shows a short game code such as TMB482. Share it on WhatsApp with one tap.
  3. Everyone else taps Join Game, types the code and their name. There is no sign-up, no password and no OTP.
  4. When everyone is in, the host taps Start Game. The host plays too and gets tickets like everyone else.
